Thou Shalt Not Preach Too Long.
Yeah….you don’t believe me…
Yeah…you mad at me…
Yeah…you say God told you to preach 4 hours and you gonna follow God…
OK…that’s cool…
But you came here to find out what I gotta say….
And this is an important component of my own homiletic…
What is too long? Well some preachers can preach for an hour and it feels like they preached five minutes.
Other preachers can preach for five minutes and it feels like they preached for two hours.
So in some sense it is based on your effectiveness…
But…don’t take that as an excuse to go too long…
If you aren’t sure if you can preach for an hour and still have effective material…then guess what…
You probably can’t…
Denomination does matter some preach longer than others…
And there are other issues as well like how many preachers will preach that day…(i.e. you don’t preach for an hour when there are 7 last words…)
But…
Why do we preach too long? Sometimes we preach too long because we have more than one sermon. We preach five sermons and say that God told us to.
Well guess what…
When you preach five sermons (many unrelated points) then your people only remember at best two of them…probably just your last one…Sometimes just your close….
Why else do we preach too long…
unrelated side points…This is related to the previous reason.
You add in asides and stories that ain’t at all relevant to the point of your sermon.
OK…so how long should I preach?
I can’t tell you that…
But….
ok..you convinced me…let me go head and tell you that…lol
Naw for real, I can’t tell you that.
But I will say that personally, I shoot for 25-35 minutes.
You preach as long as it takes to deliver the sermon God gave you…just make sure that the sermon is ONE sermon…
Now there is another commandment for preachers that every preacher must follow. 99.999% of sermons should have this.
