“OK Doc…you said I need to practice…What are you talking bout?”
I’m talking about preaching all the way through your sermon…
From the beginning…
Through the middle…
All the way to the end…
Every word…
Preferably out loud…
You don’t have to be in front of a mirror…
Also you don’t have to practice at the church…
You don’t even have to practice in front of an audience…
…but you do need to hear how EVERY word…EVERY story…and EVERY component of the sermon SOUNDS…
You will find errors as you do this…
“Can I read it in my head or do I need to vocalize each word?”
OK…going through the sermon in your head is better than nothing…
But it is kind of like when I used to play the trumpet…
There was value in going through a piece of music without actually playing the music.
But…
There is nothing that replaces actually setting your embouchure and blowing through the instrument.
In short, you get some value, but the most value comes from preaching that sermon out loud.
One way to know you are ready to preach is to get the feel of how your practice sessions go…
See You Tomorrow,
Brother Sherman
