Many people have sung it…
But in my mind I always hear Shirley Caesar’s version from when she was with the Caravans.
“God don’t need no coward soldiers.”
But in many cases…
We act cowardly…
We don’t preach the truth when it is needed.
We preach what people want to hear…
Instead of what they need to hear…
We allow the desire to wreck the house to overshadow our desire to clean the house…
We fall back on dry theology and leave application because the application might have implications for…
Who we vote for…
How we live…
Who we love…
Somebody said, “Before you complain about God being taken out of the schools, you need to fix the fact that God has been taken out of your church…”
And it is true…
Church has become in many cases simply a recreational activity where Christians congregate, pay their dues, and then leave unchanged…
Is that what we have been called to do?
Is that what we are supposed to be doing?
Why is this?
There are many varied reasons…
But today…
I’m talking bout the coward soldier…
I’m talking bout the preacher who preaches a sermon that has no relevance to my living…
I’m talking bout the preacher who never challenged me with the reality of a God that cares for the least of these…
I’m talking bout the preacher who never challenged me with the reality that God cares more than about whether you find your car keys and get to work on time, but even cares about the homeless…
I’m talking bout the preacher who never challenged me to recognize that God is not constrained by a star spangled banner and His priorities are not the same as those of a Donkey or Elephant…
I’m talking bout the preacher who never challenged me…
Because it is easier to just talk bout the by and by…
Or un-applied theology…
Or simply provide empty promises of a hook up that may or may not happen…
Dear preachers…
The caravans were right…God don’t need no coward soldiers…
Today…
I encourage you to resolved to pick up the blood stained banner…
So that when you meet the Master…
He will say…
Well Done…
Till next time…
Your Brother,
Brother Sherman
