Do you show your work in your preaching?
OK…
I’m trying to think through this…so bear with me…
What you talkign bout Cox?
OK…let me try this…
How do your people know how to apply what you throwing down in the pulpit to their lives?
People apply the scripture to their lives all the time…
When somebody guarantees that a good outcome will come, becuase God is just and wouldn’t allow any unjust thing to happen to us…
Or the guy who says, “I will never have to worry about food, becase The Bible says, that I was young and now I’m old, but I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread. (Psalm 37:25)
Now that is applying the scripture to our lives….
Now in this case, the person takes a shallow understanding of the text and superficially applies it in all cases and doesn’t even take into account the reality that it is possible that you might be hungry and still be faithful. It is possible that you might go through persecution, and still be faithful. It is possible that you might have to climb up the rough side of the mountain, because you are faithful.
One person told me once that God guarantees a six figure salary if you are tithe your income, becasue God says he will open the window’s of heaven and pour you out a blessing. (Malachi 3:10)
I don’t know how he came to this conclusion, but it demonstrates how people apply the scripture.
My point today is that it is important to not just give your understanding of the text…
You ever had a member say…”I my pastor said…”
Well…
Appealing to the authority of your pastor ain’t gonna work with grown people….
but when you “Show Your Work”…
And show, How you got to the point?
What were the steps that you followed?
How does what you are saying come from the text?
When you are preaching a point….
again…
Always…
1) Define the Point.
2) Describe the Point.
3) State the reference to the Point. (where you got it.)
4) Show how the Point is derived from the Refernce. (This is whawt I’m talking here)
In other words…don’t just tell folks what to beleive…tell them how you got to where you are at in your sermons…
Till next time…
