Are you Ready for Inspiration?
You know what?
The best sermonic ideas are not when you are sitting down trying to come up with them…
Yes you should study…
Yes you should put in the time…
But often the best ideas happen not when we are trying to “prepare a sermon” but when we are going about life.
We are standing in the checkout line at the store and something the employee said connected with a point in your daily devotional in an interesting way…
You are dreaming and something during our exegesis connects with something your husband said that sparks a sermon…
You are watching a television show and Steve Harvey says something that reminds you of a news story that now somehow connects with your sermonic text…
Yep…
It just happens…
Thoughts come….
Let me let you in on a secret…
The vast majority of the time, if you don’t collect that thought, it ain’t coming back…
I know…I know…I have said the same thing you are thinking…
“I’ll just wait and write it down later.”
Well, later it may be gone…
So what do you do?
You capture it…
You write it down…
You record it…
You do something to help you to remember…
You have a smart phone…the smart phone has an audio component. Take a quick audio note…
Or a text note…
Or take around with you a small pad…
Write it down…
And then when it is time for sermon prep again…take those notes and pull them together…
That way your exegesis is your whole life…
You are living a life of exegesis of the text…
You are always seeing blessings, notes, celebration, questions, hopes, and dreams as related to the text.
If you do this…
Go head…allow your textual exegesis to expand into your devotional life…
And then into every other area of your life…
Maranatha…
