The appeal to reason is the final appeal that Charles Koller writes of in his book How To Preach Without Notes. Koller notes that Samuel “reasoned with his people.” (1 Samuel 12:7). In addition Isaiah says, “Come now and let us reason together.” (Isaiah 1:18). And let us not forget Paul who reasoned with Jews and gentiles. (Acts 17:17).
Koller notes that both Jonathan Edwards and Charles G. Finney were very successful with this.
Great Preaching must include a variety of appeals. The people who you preach to have different levels of experience as well as different mindsets. If we are to increase our preaching effectiveness we must make an effort to use a wide variety of these appeals that Koller has laid out for us.
