I have a text and a theme, how am I supposed to preach this?
Doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen from time to time.
“They gave me a text and a theme and I just can’t figure out how I can address the text from that theme.” A preacher may ask.
Well, it is possible that the text doesn’t address the theme at all. And if you made it fit, it would not be true to the text or the theme.
What if the text addresses it, but only tangentially?
Same problem. The folks who gave you the assignment have placed you in a position where you either have to ignore the text or ignore the theme, or both.
Sometimes when this happens there is some kind of mistake. Maybe somebody copied the text wrong. Give the one who assigned you the theme a call and let them know of the dilemma.
In many cases, they will let you choose a text or at the very least find a different text.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with you giving me a theme. I can even work with you giving me a text, but if you give me both, there can be an issue.
When someone wants to force a text and a theme on you and are not flexible with either, you really need to think carefully about accepting that assignment.
What do I mean?
I mean turn it down. Again, I don’t suggest selecting your own text and preaching it.
Agree or disagree on issues here and there, the fundamentals are always the same, interpret the text, construct the sermon, and deliver it in the power of God. And this is why I created Supercharge Your Sermons. Check it out here: http://www.superchargeyoursermons.net
Now, someone has disagreed with my last email, and guess what?
You are going to get to hear what he had to say tomorrow in a guest email from him. It is worth considering.
See ya then. Keep your head up and keep preaching yall….
