So every so often someone hits me up to help them with a text to preach…

The answer is a combination of a number of things. But most importantly these three…
1) Training.
2) Practice…
3) Spirit…
You gotta have all three…
You must have the Spirit.
How do you get that?
Just pray for it.
Bathe your sermon prep in prayer.
ask for Divine help.

I suspect that all of you who read the emails for about a year will have a solid foundation on how to put together a sermon.
Don’t forget to respond to this email and tell me what else you want me to cover in the emails…
But then there is Practice.
This is where many get hung up.
This is the element of the preparation process you ain’t doing….
For real, you have to practice…
I have been picking up music as of late. Voice and piano most recently.
And you know I practice many hours for the amount of time that I perform…
But most preachers spend more time in preaching than they do in practicing their preaching.
And what do I mean by practice?
I mean going through EVERY part of the sermon construction process…
Plan, Prepare, and Present…
You must practice all three…
You practice planning by actually planning sermons…
You practice preparing, but regularly preparing sermons. Every week. Or at least every other week. At the end of 2020, you should have at least 26 sermons done, even if you only preach once a month.
You should have 26 sermons complete and ready to preach.
And if you preach every week…that should be 52…
OR 50 if you take a couple weeks off…
And then how do you practice presenting?
By Standing up and preaching your sermon “Out Loud”
Not pieces of the sermon…but the whole sermon….
A full sermon.
Not just the close…
Not just the introduction…
Not just an illustration…
No a whole sermon…with a beginning, middle, and end…
Ray Bradbury said if you write a short story every week…you will be a writer at the end of a year…
Well, my fellow preachers…if you want to be a preacher…then get in the shop and start practicing the sermon preparation muscles…
How bout you start today…
Not the top of next month…
Not next year…
But this week…put together a sermon…
Cause the only way you will be ready to preach…is to prepare to preach…
