How do you judge your community?
I remember visiting a church that had the reputation of being warm and loving once…
Nobody knew who I was…
I Just walked in…
The person at the door didn’t give me a bulletin.
It appeared that she was hugging and talking with a member…
Maybe it was a member, maybe it wasn’t…
I walked into the church and a few people looked at me and moved on.
I found a set on my own…
Still no one said a peep to me…
The service continued till testimony time…
The person talked about how loving and open the church was.
Maybe it was…
Maybe it was to members…
Maybe it was to other folks…
I don’t know….I just know that even though I saw a lot of hugging going on…
No one was talking or interacting with me…
Then it was the period of the service where they greet one another…
And hugging was going on all around…
During this period a few came and shook my hand…
I marshalled a bulletin during this period of the service…
The bulletin had on it a declaration of how loving the church was…
After service I shook hands with the minister at the door….
As I drove home…
I thought about how loving they said they were…
And how much love I felt as an outsider in the community…
And how we judge our community…
I ain’t been to your church, but I ecnourage you to find out how visitors are treated…
Also…
Who gets prayed for…
When the pastor gets sick…everybody prays for them and it is effectively spread throughout the congregation to lift him up in prayer…
But when sister Betty gets sick…there is one line in the “prayer list” and it barely gets a peep…
How do you judge your community..
All I’m saying is if you call yourself a community, then that means you are in communion with EVERYBODY in your community…
I don’t judge your church by how you treat your leaders and your well known members….
And you shouldn’t either…
I judge your church by how you treat the nobodys…
In fact your church is only a true communion when there ain’t no nobody’s…
Now…how is your preaching fostering such a community?
Till next Time,
Brother Sherman
