What do you do?
You don’t feel like preaching…
You always had a word to say when it is somebody elses mother who is dead…
You have that word in season when the deacon got the diagnoses…
But suddenly you are caught off guard when it is you…
You know one of my pastors used to always pray, “Please apply the gospel that we preach to others to ourselves…”
Preacher…
You gotta apply that balm to yourself…
Cause if you don’t…
There will come a time…
When…
All of your preaching…
All of your shouting…
All of your words of comfort…
May seem hollow…
There may come a time…
When you just don’t know what to say because it is you who is hurting…
My sisters and brothers…
If you ain’t applied the balm to yourself and felt the healing that comes..how do you know it works?
If you ain’t tasted from the cup…how do you know it is sweet…
This is why I say…
Always tell the truth…
Not what you think folks want to hear…
Don’t tell them they gonna get a cure from cancer…you don’t know…
Don’t tell them they gonna get that new house…you don’t know…
But tell them that when you had your back against the wall…God worked things out for your good…
Sometimes it was money…
Sometimes it was food…
Sometimes it was just somebody showing they care…
My sisters and brothers…preaching is reminding folks that God is still there…even when you don’t get the car…
Even when you don’t get the job…
Even when the doctor shakes her head…
Preaching is about reminding folks that God is still there…
I think too much preaching is about selling people on a pacifier that a Santa Clause in the sky gives them…
Rather than reminding them of the real God who is with you even if you make your bed in hell…
That’s what I’m talking bout…the kind of preaching that let’s folks know that God is there…
I believe the Hebrew boys said it best when threatened with the fire. They said…God is gonna deliver us…BUT IF NOT…
We still ain’t gonna bow…
My sisters and brothers, as you put together your sermons for Sunday morning…remember…
Remember to preach a “But If Not” Faith….
