Now…
Let’s turn the page…
You got your exegesis.
Now let’s get ready to craft a sermon.
Now there are a lot of ways to structure a sermon…
Narrative…
Looking at one point from multiple vantage-points…
3 points and a poem…
And on and on…
Now some sermonic methods don’t emphasize “points.”
They say you just tell the story well and allow the message to shine through…
You don’t explicitly have a “moral” or things to teach…
Well…
In contrast, today, we ain’t going down that road…
In this method we are going to come up with a number of points from the text as illustrated by our exegesis.
What did you learn that you want to teach?
So today, I want you to come up with 10 points from your passage.
Read the passage again…
And write down 10 points…
10 things you want to teach from the text…
A good point is not a question…but a declarative sentence…
Not
“Jesus asked why did you fear?”
But instead write:
“Jesus used a question to force them to confront their fear.”
A good point is one that you can illustrate with other Bible texts and stories that you should have in your exegesis.
A good point is one that you know how to celebrate with material from your exegesis.
In addition, a good point is in the text…
Why 10?
I just pulled it out of the air. The simple fact of the matter is that you want more than you are going to use…
Each point is going to be 3-5 minutes in sermon time…
So if you are going to preach a 30 minute sermon…you have 5 minute introduction…5 minute celebrative close…and 4 5 minute points…
So after you have worked with the 10, then you choose the 4 “best” points from this exercise as the basis for your sermon.
What does “best” mean?” Well the points that fit together…the points that are valuable…the points that work…but dont’ worry about that, we will get back to that in another email…
Right now, you need to choose your points…
So your 30 minutes today…I want you to select 10 “Good” sermonic points from your text.
If you need some help…go head and send me an email bout it…
OK your assignment:
1) Pray…
2) Read through your text…
3) Read through your exegesis…
4) Write down 10 points that hit you from the exegesis.
