Charles Koller’s next appeal is the appeal to love. Koller notes that all appeals can be reduced down to one of three possible appeals to love: “love of self, love of others, or love of God.”
All three are implicated in the great commandment, Love God….others…thyself. (Luke 10:27)
The supreme motivation is “love toward Christ.” “The Love of Christ constrains us” (2 Corinthians 5:14). We Love because God loved us (1 John 4:19). To know Christ is to love Christ (2 Corinthians 4:5).
Preachers must appeal to love in all of its facets if one is to make use of all the appeals of scripture. In addition, the preacher must keep in mind that the love of Christ is the supreme appeal.
