What Is A Sermon?

Posted on April 11, 2016

Now we are going to stop talking about exegesis.

You should have a good handle on your text…

Now we are going to talk about putting your sermon together…

But before we do that…

Let’s take a step back at what a sermon is…

Now there are many ways at describing a sermon…

Today, I want to look at 2…

Telling a story…

And

Preaching Points…

Now…in both cases we have sermonic points…

In both of these ways of looking at a sermon you need to find a number of points you are going to preach…

But the question is how are these points delivered…

In the “Telling a story” method…your sermon takes on the form of a long narrative…

Your sermon is essentially telling the story…

If you are going to preach on the battle of Jericho…then you begin at the beginning of the story…tell the story…and then go to the very end of the story…

If you are preaching a sermon on the life of Job…the same thing…

So you are going to tell a story…

ONE story…

The Biblical story…

As you tell the story…you will embed points that you have found in your exegesis into the story at the appropriate time…

So you are telling the story of Jonah..and as you talk about Tarshish you may have found a point in your exegesis about how far away Tarshish is from where they were…You may also have found that it is in the opposite direction of where Nineveh was…

Then with that point you may talk about how we sometimes go the opposite way from where God is directing us. You may talk about how there is no way to get away from God…Whatever your exegesis tells you…

Then you go back to telling the story until it is time for the next point that you have found in your exegesis. Then you preach that point…

The key is that you tell the story with your points embeded in the story as you tell it.

Now…

Another way of looking at sermons is as a number of connected points.

Here you take your points…one by one…and preach them…

So your first point…you tell it…

Your second point…you tell it…

Now there you take the saem points…and find another way to string them together…

The story holds the poitns together in the first method…in the second method you are looking at some metaphor to tie it together…

An example might be a question…

“How can you make sure you are on the right road?”

Number one…Go where God told you to go. You see in this text Jonah went the exact opposite…

Etc..

Another method beside a question to hold the sermon together might be a statement.

“Five Steps to Power.”

Step one…

Now there are a lot of other ways of describing what a sermon is…

But here, this is what I am assuming…

A sermon is a series of points…

Got it?

Now we are going to begin looking for points in our exegesis.

But we will get to that in the next email…

We are taking a little break for some theory here…but it is important.
