Preaching to Grandma and Dem
I am working on a lecture entitled, “Preaching to Grandma and Dem.” I have kicked the idea around for a bit. You have even read some of the material in these emails over the last few months.
I even presented the basics of the material in a presentation a few weeks ago.
You see the key to preaching that connects to the people is to preach to real people.
How do you “preach to real people?”
By asking questions…
Not just any ole kind of questions…
But REAL QUESTIONS…
Yeah…I said REAL QUESTIONS…
I want you to allow yourself to ask questions that “pious folks” are afraid to ask…
Yep…Real questions…
Ask why grandma got cancer.
Yeah the hard questions…
Ask why you still feel drawn to someone that you ain’t got no business being with.
You know what I’m talking about…That sista that ain’t your wife and that brother that ain’t your husband.
Yeah real questions, that real people ask…
Go head and ask why we still are being gunned down wearing a hoodie and holding some ice-t and skittles.
Yeah…real questions…
I want you to ask why you didn’t get that promotion.
I want you to ask, why are they following me around.
I want you to ask, why is my cousin getting gunned down by another black man in Chicago and it barely gets a whimper…
I want you to ask real questions yall..
I want you to ask if Black Lives Matter to comfortable white folks.
I want you to ask if Black Lives Matter to comfortable Black folks…
These questions from the real world will be in your head when you go to the text. These questions that real people have to deal with will force you to have a depth that those who skim the surface can only dream of.
I want you to go to the text with real questions.
So when you look at David and Bathsheba. I want you to ask questions about pornography and IF there is any relation to the text you just read. Does it say something about objectification of women?
Yes go head and do your traditional exegesis. That is important…but before you leave the text, let the concerns of Grandma and Dem to help you interpret and understand what the text means today.
I ain’t saying that you will get all the answers, but you can’t get any real answers if you ain’t got no real question.
Real questions yall…
Why ain’t God given me the victory over some issue I’m dealing with…
Real questions yall…
I want you to go to the text with questions from the real world.
And have the audacity to know…
That sometimes God will show up and give an answer…
Not a trite simple answer…
But a real answer…
Simply put, I want you to stand up like Habakkuk and ask, “Why…God…”
And just like Habakkuk, I want you to step back and wait on God to answer…
Yep…preacher allow God to preach to “Grandma and Dem.”
