Have you ever preached a sermon devoid of any theology?
No teaching about God…
No teaching about humanity’s relation to God…
No theology at all?
Well, you may disagree with me…
But I would say that is not possible…
All of our lives we are telling a story about God…
Who we think God is…
What we think God will do…
How we think God acts…
The relation of our church’s teachings to our daily lives…
All members preach their theology daily…
But some of us preach a sermon that places God away…
We preach a sermon about God that only shows up when we want something and always gives us everything we ask irregardless of what is good for us…
Some of us preach a sermon that God only shows up on Sunday morning in church and has nothing at all to say any other day of our lives…
Some of us preach a sermon about a God that only loves the righteous and is waiting with the proverbial finger on the button to destroy anybody who crosses that God…
But…
Let’s be honest…
If we look at our sermons…we tell the people our theology as well…
Does your sermon teach your people that doctrinal teaching is something that is irrelevant to life but something you better believe anyway?
Does your sermon teach your people that what you believe doesn’t really matter much…
Does your sermon teach your people that heaven is something in the future and not something to begin to experience today?
You see your choices of what to preach and how to preach it tell the people what you really believe…
I’m sure these emails are telling on me as well…
The point I want you to get out of this email is that you are teaching theology whether you mean to or not…Your innermost understanding of truth…
So don’t fool yourself into thinking you are not…
In addition, because you are teaching by your choices…it is important to be intentional about your theology…
What do you really believe about the afterlife?

What is your Biblical understanding of the end times?
How is a person saved in simple and yet not simplistic language?
You get me…
Know who you are and what you really believe…
Because…
Believe it or not…
Even when you don’t preach on those subjects…
Your understanding of those subjects are guiding and informing your preaching…
This is why I emphasize sermon planning as an important component of preaching.
