What is more difficult? Being a preacher or a Bible Scholar?
Which do you think is harder?
Which takes more work?
Go head…I’ll wait…
…
I know many of you will say that a Bible Scholar has a harder job. She must go exegete the text and delve deeply into the historical backgrounds of the text.
She must try, to the best of her ability to find what the Bible meant to the original readers…
She must work diligently in the original languages if she has that facility…
Then she must carefully write up her findings so that other Bible scholars can learn and be edified by her work…
Well guess what…
A preacher has to do all of that…
And more…
A preacher must go to the Bible and exegete it…
Pulling out the truths that are in there.
The preacher goes to Bible dictionaries, commentaries, and other materials to try to find out what the Bible meant…
And then after doing all that…
The preacher must translate that Bible into something that can be understood…
And used…
And appreciated…
And lived…
Not by other Bible scholars but by “Grandma and Them…”
Now it is true that many of us don’t have Bible languages…But you use what you have…
It is problematic when a preacher doesn’t recognize the high calling that is on the preacher’s life.
It is problematic when a preacher thinks that a shallow or superficial reading of the scripture is all that is needed to preach a sermon…
No…
Your job is harder than the Bible Scholar who has to present findings to academia, because your job presupposes that you did everything the Bible scholar did…
To the best of your ability…
And then you put that truth into a “portable pouches” that your people can take home with them…
All of that is in our calling…and if you want to see how I do it head on over to http://www.superchargeyoursermons.net.
See You Tomorrow,
Brother Sherman
