OK…Biblical interpretation is important…how to do it is important…
Teach it to your people…
Here are a few books that are accessible to laity that you can use to teach it to your people.
Now after you teach it…
Be sure to model it in your preaching…
Don’t say…
“I got a sermon…Now let me go find a text so I can preach it…
STOP IT!!!
Nope….
That ain’t how it works…
“OK…this text doesn’t mean exactly what I am saying in this sermon..but the words fit perfectly…I’ll just put it in…”
Nope…
STOP IT…
If you commit these sins…
you will be using Biblical authority to support things that are not necessarily preached by the text…
But also…
You will be teaching your people…
That it is ok to use texts to say what you want them to say…
Rather than…
allowing the text to say what it says…
This is important…because our people have come to hear a “Word from the Lord.”
And if you use and abuse the text..guess what…
They haer a word from you..
AND if they follow your methodology…
They will do the same thing in their daily lives…
The Bible will be taken from their hands…
So there are mulitple reasons to never use a text to say what it doesn’t say…
And a very important reason is that over time…as people listen to your preaching…they will begin to grasp how to interpret the Bible…
And…
What does our preaching teach them?
To those of us who have been to seminary there are a lot of resources that we have used to learn how to intperpret the Bible.
If you have not been to seminary, check out Gordon Fee’s book, “How to read the Bible for all its worth.”
Teach Bible interpretation to your people and then model correct Bible interpretation in your preaching.
