I love listening to the songs of the Freedom Movement…
You know where they followed the African American Slaves and took songs from the past and altered them to speak to them and encourage them as they fought for freedom in the 60s.
Listen to this song
They took Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Round…And added some new verses…like Ain’t Gonna Let Segregation Turn Me Round…
Or
Ain’t Gonna Let Jim Crow Turn Me Round…
Or
Ain’t Gonna Let Bull Conner…
They took a song that we all knew…and made some slight alerations to it…
To Encourage the Individual Singer to Stand firm…
To Encourage the Individual Singer to recognize they are not alone they are in a commnity of singers..
To Encourage the Individual Singer to recognize diviniy is on our side in our righteous cause…
As I thought about this the other day…
I recognized that this is really the same thing as when I speak of a celebratory challenge…
Here, WE are celebrating that we are gonna do something…
We are celebrating that we are in this thing together…
And we are celebrating that God will help us do this…
Certainly this is not to replace the “God Doing For Us” angle…
BUT
It reminds us of an important “God Doing IN us” angle….
In theolgoical terms….It reminds us of Sanctification….without forgetting about Justification…
I have begun thinking about this that I have called a “Celebratory Challenge”…
And its connection to singing…
And its connection to building community…
I’m gonna come back here in the coming days and months, cause in reality, I speak of Celebration being at the core of my homiletic…but in reality it is this Celebratory Challenge….More to come tomorrow….
At any rate this is deeply embedded in my homiletic…check it out now
Till next time…
