Abram’s folk were on a trip from Ur of the Chaldeans to Canaan.
But they stopped on the way…
They didn’t get to Canaan because they stopped in Haran.
The Bible says they settled there. (Genesis 11:31)
They were on their way to Canaan but they settled in Haran.
They took up residence there…
I don’t know why they settled in Haran…
Some scholars say it may be due to Tarah, the patriarch’s, advancing age….
But a few things come to mind…
Haran was a nice place situated near a river.
Haran was a nice place about half way between Ur and Canaan.
Haran was a nice place….
But Haran ain’t Canaan…
The interesting thing about the story is that God shows up…
And after tarah died…
God tells Abram….
Go….
Now this is a command….And even though he was headed to Canaan before, God deosn’t say where he is taking him…
Don’t know why…
Why didn’t God say…resume your trip?
Dont’ know…
Why didn’t God say…”head on to Canaan?
Don’t know…
But God said…”Go and I’ll tell you when you get there?”
Now…When they tried to go from Ur to Canaan…they stopped half way…
this time…God simply says Go…
Ain’t gonna be no more stopping….
Ain’t gonna be no more guessing….
How bout we try this….
You go and I will tell you when you get there…(Genesis 12:1)
OK…why am I bringing this story up?
Because some of yall have a call on your life…
And you started on the trip….
You left Ur of the Chaldeans and went to Bible School….
Or perhaps went to seminary….
You had the call on your life…
You got that Master of Education…
You got the call on your life…
You were the first person in your family to go to college…
You headed out….
And you graduated…
And found yourself in a position…in a place…it ain’t Canaan..but it is Haran…
You making good money…in Haran….
That beachfront property in Haran is nice…
Perhaps you got too many responsibilities to get to Canaan….Haran…is good enough….
Perhaps you got tired walking to Canaan….
Perhaps you thought that the road was gonna be easier…on the way to Canaan….and Haran is good.
But…
Today God is telling us…
I gave you the destination….
And you stopped short of the destination…
So this time forget about the destination…
This time…Just follow my lead…
This time….Just Go…
You couldn’t make it to the destination…this time I’m gonna give you the travel itinerary.
The call has come….and your ministry is now about just following God one step at a time…one day at a time….
Let us follow him…
Holy God…We praise you for your steadfastness. Today, you have called us and you continue to work with us in that call. We glory in this. Even though you don’t need us…You use us for Your Kingdom. WE beg your forgiveness in that many of us have been happy in Haran even though you called us to Canaan. We thank you for the call. We thank you for being with us. We thank you for leading us. We thank you for being willing to guide us step by step into Canaan. Please continue to tell us what to do…and provide the strength to do it…In your name, Amen.
