The Jazz Theologian

Posted on June 20, 2008

I invite you all to head on over to the Reflections of a Jazz Theologian website. The web minister of that website is exploring the use of Jazz as a metaphor for understanding Christianity. The posts are often enlightening and powerful. He has a book coming out soon entitled: Finding the Groove.

Sermons of the Black Church – God Will Fix Me

Posted on May 20, 2008

Preachers in the Black church tradition preach many messages. However there are a few that jump out at you. In this series we first looked at the idea that God Will Hook You Up. That message is definitely in the tradition and we cannot forget it. However, in these days, many are ONLY preaching this message. In addition, some are preaching a distorted caricature of this message. But, God skillfully used this message to help Black folks through some dark days in America.

Soul Stirrers – God has been a Shelter for Me

Posted on April 10, 2008

Someone has put up another classic video of the very influential group “Soul Stirrers.”

Where are the Preachers Revisited

Posted on March 20, 2008

It has been seven months since I asked the question, “Can God Count on the black Preacher?” I heard about this story on the very helpful and informative blog What about our daughters. I asked it in relation to the horrendous rape of a Black woman at the hands of some young Black men.

Dunbar Village Rape Case – Can God Count on the Black Preacher?

Posted on August 30, 2007

Have you heard about the Dunbar Village Rape? Up till today, I hadn’t and that is a shame. I wish to give props to the What about our Daughters blog for reporting on this very important subject. Here is a post where What About Our Daughters simply asks, “What is in the water.”

On The Introduction of Speakers

Posted on July 28, 2007

The Biblical Preaching Blog continues its practical consideration of the preacher’s task by looking at speaker introductions.

It is an interesting question when one has a preacher that is unfamiliar to the congregation. I think that an introduction can be helpful and is perhaps necessary, but often, as Mead of Biblical Preaching notes, can be too long and list too many things.

Web Pages I am Visiting

Posted on July 21, 2007

Over the last couple of months I have added a number of sites to my links section. I wish to highlight a few that I visit often and may be helpful to you.

  • The other day I found the Audio Bible website. This is the entire King James version of the Bible narrated by Alexander Scourby. If you are having issues reading the Bible, why not listen to it at this site.

Articulating the Gospel – Beyond Regurgitation

Posted on May 1, 2007

I must admit that I am impressed by these brothers at Reformed Blacks of America. They are seeking to push African Americans in that movement to apply the Gospel to their own context and not simply regurgitate the pre-packaged presentations of our white colleagues.

I would encourage you to read the whole entry, but of special interest are the 4 traits of Radical Reformed Churches.

Alcoholics Anonymous or Church – Where is the Community?

Posted on April 24, 2007

The Reformed Blacks of America Blog has a post up on the community of care created by Alcoholics Anonymous groups. One seminary student said to the author:

“Michael, I felt more accepted and received amongst that group of individuals than I do my own church family.”
